On 3 January 2023, team India will kick off their cricketing action of this new year with a three-match T20I series at home against Sri Lanka. Followed by that, they will play a three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka. However, Rohit Sharma sustained a thumb injury during the recent ODI series in Bangladesh.

So, he missed the last ODI and the two-match Test series. In his absence, KL Rahul led the team in the Test series.  However, in the upcoming T20I series also, Hardik Pandy will lead the Men in Blue while big players like Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli have not been taken into consideration. Rohit Sharma will be back in action as the skipper in the ODI series.

Meanwhile, the Indian Cricket Board arranged a performance review meeting in Mumbai on 1 January 2023. The main motive of that meeting was to discuss the results from 2022 and the future steps for the betterment of Indian Cricket. Several notable identities attended the meeting as they took some tough decisions for the future. In an official statement, the Indian Cricket Board said: “The Indian Cricket Board on Sunday convened the review meeting of Team India (Senior Men) in Mumbai. The meeting was attended by the Board President Mr. Roger Binny, Honorary Secretary Mr. Jay Shah, Indian Captain Mr. Rohit Sharma, Team India (Senior Men) Head Coach Mr. Rahul Dravid, Head of Cricket (NCA) Mr. VVS Laxman and Chairman of Senior Men Selection Committee Mr. Chetan Sharma.”

Speaking of key recommendations from that meeting, the Board has shortlisted 20 players for the upcoming 2023 ODI World Cup in India. They will rotate this pool of players in the next 35 ODIs India will play in 2023. Several players like Deepak Chahar, Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah, and Ravindra Jadeja sustained severe injuries in 2022. So, they will also focus on the fitness level of players. VVS Laxman-led National Cricket Academy (NCA) will work with Indian T20 League franchises to monitor players’ fitness, especially those who have a history of injuries. Apart from all these, the Board also confirmed that both Yo-Yo Test and Dexa will now be part of the selection criteria. Hence, players need to pass those tests to get into the team. After such announcements, fans started to troll the India skipper Rohit Sharma as he has sustained several injuries recently due to fitness issues.
