Chennai beat Bangalore by 23 runs to register their first win of the season on Tuesday at DY Patil Sports Academy in Mumbai. Bangalore won the toss and asked Chennai to bat first. Ruturaj Gaikwad and Robin Uthappa did not have the optimal start as they were slow, to begin with. Josh Hazlewood struck the first wicket of the match, dismissing Gaikwad (17 runs in 16 balls) for 19 in the 4th over. The Men in Yellow managed 35 runs in the powerplay. In the 7th over, Moeen Ali was involved in an unfortunate run-out and had to depart to leave Chennai in trouble at 36 for 2 in 6.4 overs.

Shivam Dube was promoted ahead of Ambati Rayudu, which turned out to be a great move. Uthappa played the anchor for a while and Dube scored quickly. The former started to increase the speed from the 13th over. Uthappa reached his fifty with a four in the 15th over. Dube, too, scored a four in the same over to reach his half-century. Both kept scoring sixes before Uthappa was dismissed in the penultimate over by Wanindu Hasaranga. He scored 88 runs in 50 balls with four boundaries and nine sixes. Uthappa and Dube added 165 runs for the third wicket partnership.

Hasaranga picked up another wicket of Ravindra Jadeja on the next ball. Chennai, at that stage, were at 201 with one over to go. Dube took the strike and hit the first ball for a six and hit the fourth ball for a six as well. He was then dropped on the last ball of the innings as Chennai managed 216 runs on the board. The left-hander scored 95 runs in 46 balls, hitting five fours and eight sixes.

In reply, Bangalore also endured a poor start. Chennai started with spinners in the powerplay and got the results as well. Maheesh Theekshana got Faf du Plessis for a score of 14 in the third over. Virat Kohli also departed in the 5th over off Mukesh Chowdhary. Theekshana then dismissed Anuj Rawat on the last ball of the powerplay to leave Bangalore in trouble at 42 for 3 in 6 overs.

Glenn Maxwell was quick to follow as he lost his wicket in the 7th over. Jadeja cleaned him up to get his first wicket at a score of just 50 runs on board. Shahbaz Ahmed and the debutant Suyash Prabhudesai tried to stabilize the innings as they added 60 runs for the 5th wicket partnership. Theekshana finally got Prabhudesai in the 13th over for 34 runs in 18 balls. The Sri Lankan then dismissed Ahmed in his last over to complete his four-wicket haul. Ahmed scored 41 runs in 27 balls. After 15 overs, Bangalore had scored 140 runs for the loss of 6 wickets.

Jadeja then took the wickets of Hasaranga and Akash Deep in the 16th over. Dinesh Karthik tried his best to win the match, towards the end, but his efforts were not enough. Dwayne Bravo dismissed him in the 18th over to help Chennai take complete control of the game. Karthik scored 34 runs in 14 balls, including two fours and three sixes. However, he couldn't guide the team home. Bangalore, eventually, fell 23 runs short of the target.
