Virat Kohli surpassed MS Dhoni as India’s Test captain for most matches

Virat Kohli has now lead India in the highest number of Tests matches. The World Test Championship final is Kohli’s 61st Test as captain of the Indian team. Thereby, he surpassed MS Dhoni, who had captained India in 60 Tests.

Virat Kohli has now lead India in the highest number of Tests matches. The World Test Championship final is Kohli’s 61st Test as captain of the Indian team. Thereby, he surpassed MS Dhoni, who had captained India in 60 Tests.

The first day of the championship final was a washout because of excessive rain and a wet outfield. So, the toss was done on the second day of the one-off Test series. Virat Kohli lost the toss against New Zealand’s captain Kane Williamson and was asked to bat first.

A win in the WTC final would give India the championship title. It would also return India to the number one spot in ICC Test rankings.

After New Zealand won the two-match test series against England, they took the number 1 spot on the chart. Thereby, India has slipped to second place. The in the title match would take India back to the top.

With 36 wins, Virat Kohli is already the most successful Test captain of India. In 2019 he surpassed MS Dhoni’s record of 27 wins. In terms of Test wins, Kohli is tied with West Indies captain Clive Lloyd. Australian skippers Ricky Ponting and Steve Waugh occupy the second and third positions with 48 wins and 41 wins respectively. But South African captain Graeme Smith is in first place with 53 Test wins.

The Virat Kohli era for India in Test cricket began in December 2014

Virat Kohli’s first Test as the Indian Test captain was in Adelaide in 2014. He had scored two centuries in that match and almost secured a win for India. But Nathan Lyon changed the game and secured a 48 run win for India. 

MS Dhoni then returned as the captain of the next two Test matches before he announced his retirement from red-ball cricket. Thereby, Virat Kohli’s full-time tenure as the Indian Test captain began in Sydney in January 2015.

After that, Virat Kohli led India to nine consecutive Test series victories from 2015 to 2017. Under his leadership, India ruled the ICC Test rankings for almost four years. 

Virat Kohli has also dominated the field with the bat as a Test captain. He has made 5392 runs which is the fourth most run as a Test skipper. Taking a cut off of more than 4000 runs in Tests matches, Virat Kohli leads the average charts with 58.6. Brian Lara is the next player on the list with an average of 57.83.
