Star Indian javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra achieved another historic feat on Sunday. He won the gold with an amazing throw of 88.17 in the final of the World Athletics Championship in Budapest, Hungary. It was his second attempt during the final, which reached the throwing distance of 88.17 meters.
Neeraj’s throw remained on top till the end of the final. Notably, it is also a change of medal colour for the Indian star as he won the silver medal in the Worlds in 2022. However, the defending Olympic champion couldn’t get the expected start in the final as he could throw the javelin to a distance of only 79 meters. He was also dejected with that effort as he refused to register the score owing to crossing the line of foul.
But then came the amazing second attempt from Chopra after he got a big cheer from the crowd. He ran in his usual style, and just after the throw, he started celebrating even before his throw reached the final destination.
Neeraj Chopra's Pakistani counterpart Arshad Nadeem bags silver after a return from injury
Chopra’s Pakistani counterpart Arshad Nadeem, who was making his comeback from an elbow injury also achieved one of his career’s best achievements. Nadeem finished in the second spot with a throw of 87.82 meters and won the silver medal. Jakub Vadlejch of the Czech Republic ended up in the third position, winning the bronze medal with his throw of 86.67 m.
Apart from the Olympian Gold medalist Chopra, there were two other Indians in the final of the World Athletics Championship, Kishore Jena and DP Manu. Both ended up on the fifth and sixth spots with impressive performances. Jena threw his career best of 84.77 meters, followed by Manu’s 84.14 meters.
Neeraj Chopra is currently the World No. 1 in the world ranking of javelin throw. He is only the second Indian to win a medal at the Worlds just after Anju Bobby Goerge, who ended up with the bronze medal in Paris, in 2003 in the women’s long jump.
Here’s how fans reacted to the sheer dominance and unstoppable success of Neeraj Chopra:
