Washington Sundar ends as top ranked Indian T20I bowler for 2nd consecutive year

Washington Sundar is at it again. Sundar concluded 2020 by finishing as the highest ranked Indian bowler in the ICC T20I bowling rankings table. This is the 2nd consecutive year in which the bowler managed to do so. Back in 2019, Sundar ended at 14th in the ICC T20I rankings, with 599 points to his name at that time. Deepak Chahar was the 2nd highest ranked Indian bowler, with 581 points.

Sundar concluded 2020 by finishing as the highest ranked Indian bowler in the ICC T20I bowling rankings table. This is the 2nd consecutive year in which the bowler managed to do so. This year, Sundar improved somewhat, finishing at no 12 in the ICC T20I bowlers ranking table, with 614 points to his name. However, Jasprit Bumrah was the 2nd highest ranked Indian bowler this time, with 593 points to his name. 

Who tops the ICC T20I bowlers rankings table?

Afghanistan bowler Rashid Khan is at the top of the list once again, with 736 points to his name this year. Even last year, the leg spinner was the highest ranked bowler in the ICC T20I bowling rankings table. In 2019, Rashid had 749 points to his name. At the no 2 spot is Rashid’s international teammate Mujeeb Ur Rahman, with 730 points in total. Surprisingly, Rahman also finished 2nd in the bowling rankings table in 2019.

England bowler Adil Rashid is at no 3 in the list, with 700 points to his name this year. Following him at no 4 is Australian bowler Adam Zampa. The spinner has a tally of 685 this year. At no 5 on the list is South African bowler Tabraiz Shamsi, with 680 points in total. Australian bowler Ashton Agar is 6th, with 664 points in total. At no 7 is Tim Southee, with 636 points. West Indies bowler Sheldon Cottrell is at no 8 with 634 points. At no 9 and no 10 are NZ bowler Mitchell Santner and England bowler Chris Jordan. Santner has 628 points, while Jordan has 618 points to his name. 

The rise of Sundar in the T20I format

Washington Sundar made his T20I debut in 2017 against Sri Lanka. In 2018, Sundar got 6 chances to play for India. In those 6 outings, he picked 9 wickets with a superb economy rate of 6.13. Regarding his numbers this year, the bowler scalped 6 wickets in 8 T20I matches this year. Sundar also boasts an impressive bowling strike rate of 25. Sundar has replaced Kuldeep Yadav, and is now India’s secondary T20I spinner. Washington Sundar can become the next big thing for India if he keeps delivering such performances.
