India took on arch-rivals Pakistan on 23 October 2022 in Melbourne in the ongoing 20-20 World Cup. However, fans were looking for a better performance from the Men in Green as they lost to Pakistan in the last World Cup. Eventually, India did not disappoint their fans as they managed to win a last-ball thriller.
However, Mohammad Nawaz got the opportunity to bowl the last over of that match when India needed 16 runs. But, he failed to defend as India won the match. Now, Virender Sehwag came up with a funny dig at Nawaz in reference to Wasim Akram.
“You aren't Wasim Akram then why (attempt seam-up bowling)” - Virender Sehwag on Mohammad Nawaz
While speaking on Cricbuzz, Virender Sehwag said that Mohammad Nawaz should have gone with his spinning deliveries rather than the seam-up deliveries. He said: "Had I been there, I would have advised him to bowl normal left-arm spin because you are going to be hit for runs, but there should be no worries. Yes, 16 runs are not less but don't be afraid to bowl.
He also added that Nawaz is not Wasim Akram, Hence, there is no need of trying such things. “Why are you even trying to attempt something that you have never done in your entire life with the ball in hand? Wasim Akram thodi na hai aap. Toh phir kyun karna? (You aren't Wasim Akram then why (attempt seam-up bowling)),” Virender Sehwag concluded. Speaking of the match, Pakistan batted first and scored 159 runs for eight wickets in 20 overs. In reply, Indian batters were under pressure throughout the innings.
In the last over, India needed 16 runs. Mohammad Nawaz came up to bowl but he went with seam–up deliveries. He also took the wicket of Hardik Pandya on the first delivery only. But, ultimately, he failed to defend as India clinched the match on the last delivery. Virat Kohli won the player of the match award for his 82* runs knock-off 53 balls.
