Punjab batting coach Wasim Jaffer has resigned from his job ahead of the mega auction. Jaffer was appointed in December 2019 by the franchise for two years. At that stage, he was still playing first-class cricket for Vidarbha. He worked with the team in seasons 2020 and 2021 alongside Anil Kumble (head coach) and Jonty Rhodes (fielding coach).

In July last year, the former India Test opening batter was appointed as the head coach of the Odisha team for two years. The right-hander took over from Rashmi Parida. With Ranji Trophy returning after a two-year hiatus from February 17, it is believed that Jaffer wants to be focused fully on the Odisha team.

The 43-year-old played in the inaugural season of the Indian T20 League for Bangalore and amassed 115 runs in six games, averaging 19.16. Meanwhile, Jaffer shared a photo of Ranbir Kapoor from the movie 'Ae Dil Hai Mushkil' where the latter was singing 'Channa Merya' on his official Twitter handle.

"Adios, and thank you @PunjabKingsIPL, it's been a pleasure. Wishing @anilkumble1074 and the team very best for #IPL2022," the Mumbai-born player tweeted.

Meanwhile, the 2014-finalists have retained only two players - India Test opener Mayank Agarwal (12 crore INR) and uncapped Arshdeep Singh (4 crore INR). Notably, Agarwal's retention means that 14 crore INR were deducted from the purse. They have a total of 72 crore available to spend in the auction, starting on February 12. Meanwhile, Anil Kumble also wished luck to Wasim Jaffer on social media.
