Pakistan and Afghanistan locked horns in what was a must-win game for the Blue Brigade in Sharjah on September 8. In the Super Four game of the ongoing Asia Cup 2022, the Green Brigade won the toss and elected to bowl first. Their decision was proving to be wrong in the first overs after Afghanistan scored 36 runs in the first four overs.
On the last ball of the fourth over, in-form Rahmanullah Gurbaz (17) got out to Haris Rauf. After this, the Afghan innings never got going even though some of the top-order batters got good starts. They could not convert those starts onto big scores. This is the reason that even after losing just six wickets, they could only amass 129/6. The Pakistani bowlers kept their opposition at bay for most of the innings.
In reply, the Afghan bowlers fought back and took the wickets of opposition skipper Babar Azam ad Fakhar Zaman in the powerplay. The likes of Mohammad Rizwan and Iftikhar Ahmed brought the innings back on track. Shadab Khan, who was promoted up the order, also scored a valuable 36. After the trio's wickets, the team started losing back-to-back wickets.
In the midst of the collapse, things got heated up after the wicket of Asif Ali, who was the ninth wicket to fall for the two-time winners. Fareed Ahmed, who took the wicket of Ali, celebrated on the latter's face aggressively. This didn't go down well with the Pakistan batter who almost threatened to hit him with the bat.

Even after losing nine wickets in pursuit of chasing a paltry total, the Babar Azam-led side managed to win the game by one wicket. Naseem Shah saved his side with the bat as he hit two sixes to help his team qualify for the final.
