The T20 format in cricket has given a boost to a lot of innovation in the sport. The evolution of cricket has been rather rapid as the T20 format has grown in popularity, particularly when it comes to batters improvising to develop new shots to open up more scoring areas.

From switch-hits to reverse-scoops and lap shots, several shots that were once considered unusual – even shocking – are now considered completely normal. On Wednesday, Australian batter Jake Lehmann stepped up the improvisation by hitting a boundary with a scoop using the back of his bat.

South Australia's Lehmann faced Tasmania's off-spinner Jarrod Freeman in a match in the Marsh Cup, Australia's domestic List A tournament. Lehmann got down before scooping the ball over the wicketkeeper's head with the back of his bat after Freeman angled the ball into him.

Cricket.com.au shared the video on their Twitter account, and it has since gone viral. "We're going to need a name for this shot! Jake Lehmann goes over the keeper with the BACK of his bat! #MarshCup," read the caption of the video.

Here is the viral video

South Australia was bowled out for 220 after Lehmann scored 34 off 35 deliveries. Alex Carey led the team in scoring with 59 runs. None of the other batters had much of an impact. Tasmanian seamer Tom Rogers did the majority of the damage with the ball, taking five wickets for 32 runs. Riley Meredith took two wickets as well.

The total was insufficient to challenge Tasmania, who easily won the match. Ben McDermott and Caleb Jewell's 198-run opening partnership all but sealed Tasmania's victory. While McDermott was bowled for 71 off 90 balls by Benjamen Manenti, Jewell went on to hit an unbeaten 126 off 97 balls as they completed the chase in 32.5 overs and won by eight wickets.

In the meantime, Australia is all set to host the upcoming T20 World Cup in October and November. The tournament's group stage will begin on October 16th, followed by the super 12 stages on October 22nd.
