Former Pakistan skipper Azhar Ali found himself in a precarious situation after the end of Day Two in the ongoing first Test between Pakistan and Australia. Ali was asked a difficult question at the post-day press conference about his marathon innings. Instead of praising Ali for his marathon knock of 185, the journalist questioned his intent and slow approach to the game.
‘Azhar, when players score centuries, it becomes a part of the record. And when it’s a big century, it’s even better. Both you and Imam got big hundreds but do you two realize how much did it affect the team? Imam, who was trying to make a comeback played too slow. You also did not do enough. 460 in two days, the scorecard was in front of you. Don’t you think you two could have been more courageous?” the journalist said to Azhar.
The Lahore-born player, however, said shut him with a befitting reply saying he doesn't need to answer such questions as the answer lies in the question itself.
In the game, Pakistan won the toss and elected to bat first in Rawalpindi. Openers Imam Ul Haq and Abdullah Shafique (44) stitched a partnership of 105 before the latter was dismissed by Nathan Lyon. At this stage, the right-hander came out to bat and joined hands with Haq. The former skipper came into the series on the back of multiple failures with the bat in the last year.
The 37-year-old went on to score 185 runs and added 208 runs with Haq (157) for the second wicket. The left-hander was trapped lbw by opposition skipper Pat Cummins. The Babar Azam-led side amassed 476/4 and declared the innings.
Meanwhile, the match is heading towards a dead draw as Australia are 271-2 at the end of Day 3.
