Melbourne Renegades spinner Cameron Boyce took four wickets in four balls in their last group stage game against Sydney Thunder. The Thunder had a dominating start as captain Usman Khawaja continued his dream run from the Ashes. He, along with Alex Hales added 80 runs for the first wicket in seven overs.
Boyce dismissed Hales on the last delivery of the seventh over for 44 runs off 22 balls. In his next over, Boyce took three wickets on the first three deliveries and completed his double hat-trick. Jason Sangha tried to go for a big shot after coming out of his crease on the first delivery, only to miss and get stumped. Alex Ross tried to play a reverse sweep despite knowing that he was facing the hat-trick delivery and paid the price with his wicket. Daniel Sams tried to play the next delivery across the line and it hit him on his pad and he was adjudged LBW. Thunder lost four wickets for just five runs.
But, Khawaja didn’t shy away from playing his natural game as wickets kept falling at one end. He completed his half-century in the 14th over and went on to score 77 runs off 51 balls. Zak Evans dismissed him in the 19th over. Thunder was able to post a total of 170 runs for the loss of eight wickets in 20 overs.
Boyce claimed five wickets in four overs while giving away just 21 runs. It was the first fifer of Boyce’s T20 career who has played seven T20Is for Australia. He last played for the Australian team back in January 2016 against India. For Renegades, captain Aaron Finch made a half-century at the time of writing and the team required 66 runs off 40 deliveries.
