As India began their Asia Cup 2023 campaign against arch-rivals Pakistan, star batter Virat Kohli was the centre of attraction as ever. However, the flamboyant batter failed to display his heroics this time as he was dismissed cheaply early in the innings. India suffered an early setback in their tournament opener at Pallekale on Saturday (September 2) as Pakistan pace sensation Shaheen Shah Afridi was at his absolute best in the powerplay.
India captain Rohit Sharma won the toss in a high-octane clash and chose to bat first considering the conditions in Kandy. India started off well with Rohit hitting a couple of boundaries before rain interrupted play in the 4.2 over. Shaheen, who did not look threatening much in the initial overs, regained his rhythm when play resumed and took the prize wicket of the rival captain in the last ball of his over. Pakistan got an early breakthrough and the Indian crowd was silenced as Rohit returned to the pavilion after scoring 11 off 22 balls.
Before India could recover from the initial blow, Shaheen did another damage in his next over, this time it was the wicket of Virat Kohli and it was huge. The former India captain opened his account with a boundary but failed against a delivery that stayed a tad low. While looking to punch Shaheen’s delivery through offside, Kohli got an inside edge and it deflected and hit the stumps. Fans expected another masterpiece innings from their favorite but he had to return to the pavilion after scoring just 4 runs off 7 balls.

Shaheen broke the hearts of not only Indian fans but also his own fans
However, Kohli's dismissal disappointed not only the Indian fans but also some Pakistani fans. The ace batter has a massive fan following across the globe thanks to his exploits in all formats of the game over the years. A video of a Pakistani fan expressing her disappointment after Kohli's failure to score big against her team has gone viral on social media. She travelled all the way from Pakistan to Sri Lanka to see her 'favourite' score a century but had to return 'heartbroken'.

Both teams shared one point each as the match was called off due to rain. After winning their first match against Nepal, Pakistan have now progressed to the Super Four stage with three points. India, meanwhile, needs to beat Nepal on September 2 to advance to the next round.
