The first of the three matches against Australia turned out to be a nightmare for the Indian team. Due to poor death bowling, they gave up 40 runs in the final three overs, making it impossible for them to hold on to the total of 208 runs.

Apart from the death bowling, the lack of wickets in the middle overs was a worry for the men in blue. Umesh Yadav then emerged, taking two wickets in a single over. However, skipper Rohit Sharma is to be credited as he took DRS on both occasions despite the wicket-keeper Dinesh Karthik and the bowler showing no interest.

Australia reached 122/2 after 11.2 overs while trying to reach a 209-run target. When Steve Smith edged one to wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik, Yadav was in the middle of his 12th over. Smith was not ruled out by the umpire, but the Indian camp requested DRS and was successful.

The final ball of the same over was then edged to Karthik by Glenn Maxwell. The Indian camp once more requested DRS after the umpire signalled not out, and they were successful. Rohit seemed very irritated at this point. Karthik was even mock-choked by him.

As for the match, KL Rahul and Suryakumar Yadav stabilized the innings after India had lost two wickets. The two scored 55 and 46 runs, respectively, which allowed the batters to follow to play with freedom. Hardik Pandya did that and played a magnificent knock of 71 runs in just 30 balls. He had a strike rate of 236 and hit seven fours and five sixes in his innings.

With the ball, India lacked confidence right from the start. They leaked runs in the powerplay, and the Australian team was able to capitalize on the start. They constantly maintained their scoring rate and perfectly finished the game. Cameron Green (65) and Matthew Wade (45) were the stars of the chase for the current World T20 Champions.

On September 23, Nagpur will host the second game in the series.
