Indian skipper Rohit Sharma showed his class during the first ODI against England. He scored an unbeaten 76. This knock came when he had a string of failures since the Indian T20 League 2022. In the tournament, Sharma could only muster 268 runs in 14 games at an average of 19.14 with the highest score of 48. In the preceding T20I series, the right-hander could only manage 66 runs.
The Mumbaikar was looking to get some runs under his belt. With the Three Lions being restricted to 110 all-out, he had a lot of time to get some score without any rush. He scored 76 off just 58 balls including seven fours and five sixes. During the inning, the 35-year-old played quite a few pull shots against pacers. One of them went on to hit a child in the stands.
Commentators Michael Atherton and Ravi Shastri felt that someone was hit in the stands. They were proved right as a six-year-old child was hit with the ball.
“It seems someone in the crowd may have gotten hit by this six from Rohit Sharma. Fingers crossed… nobody is hurt,” said Michael Atherton.
“Yes, looks that way. The way Rohit is looking towards that area, he might have got the message it’s probably hit someone,” Shastri added.

The game was stopped for a while to check whether everything was ok. The girl got some medical attention and the game was resumed shortly after. Rohit and Shikhar Dhawan ensured that the team won the game by 10 wickets. They scored 114 runs for the first wicket and completed 5000 runs as India openers. Overall, the pair has scored 5108 runs in 112 games from 2013 till now. Among India openers, only the pair of Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly are ahead of them. The duo scored 6609 runs in 132 games from 1996-2007. It will be interesting to see whether this record gets broken or not.
