Steve Smith scored his 31st century in a Test game on Thursday, June 8. The right-hander accomplished the feat while playing for Australia versus India in the World Test Championship (WTC) final at London's Kennington Oval. With 95 runs off 227 balls and 14 fours on Test Day 1 at Stumps, Smith became unbeaten. However, he was shown the way to the pavilion by Shardul Thakur at a score of 121 off 268 deliveries.

Shardul bowled an unplayable delivery and all Steve Smith could do was nick it onto his off stump. Thakur’s vicious in-swinger found the inside edge that helped it onto the stumps to dislodge the bails. The video of the dismissal has gone viral on the Internet with fans hailing Thakur, popularly dubbed as the Lord, for getting the all-important wicket.

Shardul Thakur called the WTC Final a ‘once in a lifetime moment’

The World Test Championship final between India and Australia, which begins on Wednesday at The Oval, has been dubbed a "once-in-a-lifetime moment" by fast-bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur of India. He wants to make it count.

"I feel that ICC event, finals especially, you don't get to play them everywhere each and every year, so it's, for a few players or somebody like me, a once-in-a-lifetime moment," Thakur said. He added, "All that I want is to make it count. It's always a special moment when you're representing your country — especially India when there's a billion people out there who dream of playing for the nation and only the best 15 have been chosen to represent the country.”

Since bowlers frequently have an advantage in cloudy situations, Thakur advised batters to exploit their advantage in England when the sun is shining. "I think England is challenging because the weather here is a bit funny. When the sun's out it is good for batting, when it's overcast it's good for bowling, so the toss hardly matters, it's all about the cloud cover. Obviously, the pitch also plays an important role, but we've seen in the past that whenever there's cloud cover the ball suddenly starts swinging and you can't really predict how much the ball is going to move, so that's one of the biggest challenges that a batter faces," he said.
