The first ODI of the three-match series between India and the West Indies is currently underway at Queen’s Park Oval Ground in Trinidad. West Indies skipper, Nicholas Pooran won the toss and asked India to bat first.

The skipper wanted to put India on the backfoot by picking wickets early on. However, Shikhar Dhawan and Shubman Gill ruined all their hopes. The duo stitched a 119-run partnership for the opening wicket to lay the foundation of a substantial total on the scoreboard.

Gill was preferred over the likes of Ishan Kishan and Ruturaj Gaikwad to open the innings in the ongoing game. He made great use of the opportunity but would be gutted to not have converted the start into a big score.

Gill played with the right intent and looked flawless throughout his stay at the crease. The Kolkata batter was the aggressor of the two during the partnership. Dhawan and Gill notched as many as 73 runs in the first 10 overs and Gill had contributed 41 off 28 balls out of those.

He reached his fifty off just 36 balls and raced to 64 runs in 53 balls. Gill looked to convert that into a big score but a lazy piece of running led to his undoing in the 18th over.

Facing Joseph, Gill tapped the ball to mid-wicket and set himself off for a single. The Indian batter didn’t expect Pooran to throw the ball at the non-striker’s end and thus didn’t run as far as he should have. Gill jogged across for a single but Pooran was quite aware of that and catched Gill short of his crease by running him out. As a result, he had to depart for 64 off 53 balls. Shikhar Dhawan, on the other hand, missed out on a century by 3 runs. He departed after scoring 97 runs in 99 balls. Shreyas Iyer also played a handy knock of 54 runs in 57 balls, including 5 fours and 2 sixes. At the time of writing, India are at 292 for 5 in 48 overs.
