Indian speedster Umran Malik was handed over the difficult task of defending 17 runs in the final over in the second T20I against Ireland. The 22-year-old held his nerves and successfully defended the total. Earlier, he made his Indian debut in the first T20I of the series. He was handed his cap by veteran pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar.
Recalling the incident, Malik said that he was in tears as he was emotional to be playing for India. "It was a dream for me to play for India and Bhuvi (Bhuvneshwar Kumar) bhai gave me the cap. I had tears in my eyes. It is a dream for all of us to play for India," he said in a video released by BCCI on their Twitter handle.

The pacer went on to say that Hardik Pandya gave him the confidence to deliver in the last over, which calmed him down. "I felt really good when we were able to defend 17 runs in the final over which I bowled. Initially, I put in the wide areas and Hardik bhai asked me to bowl normal length, it was a no-ball," he said.
"When Ireland needed eight from three balls, Hardik bhai told me if I deliver two dot balls, we will win and that is exactly what happened. He showed trust in me and I won over his trust also with my bowling," he added.

Malik's debut, however, did not go as planned. He only bowled one over, and gave 14 runs in the same. The Jammu and Kashmir pacer had impressed everyone with his raw pace in the Indian T20 League 2022. Playing for Hyderabad, Malik consistently bowled at speeds over 150 kmph. His excellent skills earned him his maiden Indian call-up in the five-match T20I series against South Africa.
