In the opening ODI of the three-match series against the West Indies, India captain Rohit Sharma astounded cricket fans and experts with his batting order experimentation. Former captain Virat Kohli and skipper Rohit Sharma did not start batting till the other half of the team had returned to the pavilion.

In the series opener against the West Indies, Kohli did not even bat as Rohit Sharma batted for India at number 7. Notably, the Indian management and skipper Rohit ordered the youthful players Ishan Kishan and Shubman Gill to chase down the low target of 115 runs.

Rohit Sharma's number 7 batting statement on social media raises concerns ahead of World Cup 2023

West Indies managed to scalp 5 wickets of India and then came the skipper Rohit Sharma to take the charge and finish across the line for India. Apart from this, he was also asked in the post-match presentation if he remembers the last time when he batted at number 7.

Replying to it, the 36-year-old felt a bit nostalgic and recalled he made his international debut at number 7. "I made my debut at No.7, it reminded me today of those days (smiles),” said Rohit Sharma during the post-match presentation. Rohit also spoke about the behaviour of the wicket at the Kensington Oval; he expressed his surprise at the way the pitch played with the time during the match.

"To be honest, I never thought the pitch was going to play like that. It was the team's need that we wanted to have a score in front of us but never thought the pitch would deteriorate like that. It had something for everyone. But never thought we'd restrict them to that low a score. We said that we wanted to give a chance to the guys. Never thought we'd lose five wickets but it was a good chance to give a chance to a lot of the guys who have just come,” said Rohit.

Returning to Rohit's remarks about batting at position seven, Indian cricket fans did not take this statement well and responded in a variety of ways on social media. Fans reminded Rohit and Team India on Twitter to take the World Cup in 2023 seriously.
