In a delightful piece of news for the Mumbai Indians fans, the franchise has appointed the former Sri Lankan pacer Lasith Malinga as the bowling coach of the team. He will take over his duties in the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League in 2024. He will be taking over the charge from the former New Zealand pacer Shane Bond.
Notably, Bond has been working with the five-time IPL champions for the last couple of years in a row. Apart from that, Bond is also associated with the MI Emirates franchise of ILT20 in the capacity of head coach.
Coming back to Malinga, he was with Rajasthan Royals lately as a bowling coach, where he started his stint in the 15th season of the tournament. Earlier, he was active for Mumbai Indians as a star bowler for almost a decade and also served as their mentor five years back in the year 2018.
Lasith Malinga won five T20 titles with Mumbai Indians, including 4 IPL trophies
The former Sri Lankan legend has been a part of Mumbai’s team in five title wins including Indian Premier League trophies in 2013, 2015, 2017, and 2019, alongside a Champions League T20 title in 2011. He appeared in 139 matches for MI, in which he scalped 195 wickets, which also includes 170 wickets in the IPL.
Talking about cricket, the Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai side had a good run in the Indian Premier League 2023 as they made it to the knockout stage of the tournament. They won the eliminator contest against the Lucknow Super Giants but failed to go past the IPL 2022 champions in the second qualifier and got knocked out of the tournament.
The devoted MI fans are also happy with the comeback of Lasith Malinga in the franchise, be it with a change of capacity. Now, he will be accompanying the former MI batting maestro Kieron Pollard, who is serving as the batting coach of the side. The fans came up with a lot of interesting reactions to Malinga’s comeback to MI.
Here’s how fans reacted:
