Delhi Capitals head coach Ricky Ponting was effusive in praise of batter Shreyas Iyer after he got to make his Test debut for India against New Zealand. The former Australia captain congratulated the 26-year-old and said it was a well-deserved opportunity. Ponting, who has seen Iyer’s rise as the captain and lead batter for Capitals, has always given him the freedom to express himself. During this edition of the Indian Premier League, Iyer contributed richly to DC’s success.
The 26-year-old scored handy runs and finished the match for the Capitals. The Capitals' coach was also one of the first guys to welcome the right-hand batter to the squad post recovering from the shoulder injury which saw him miss the first leg of IPL
Ponting has seen Iyer in his downs and ups and knows how much hard work he has put in to be worthy of finally being selected in the Test team.

"Having seen all the work you've put in over the last few years, very well deserved and only the beginning for you mate. Proud of you Shreyas Iyer," tweeted Ponting quoting the BCCI video.
It has not been an ideal year for Iyer ever since he got the untimely shoulder injury earlier in 2021. He lost his IPL captaincy to Rishabh Pant and also a place in the 20-20 World Cup team. Iyer though was given an opportunity in the upcoming three T20Is against New Zealand and now he has finally made his Test debut after several senior players were given a break.
