India locked horns with Sri Lanka in the Super 4 round of the Asia Cup on the back of a stunning defeat against Pakistan in the first match. The Sri Lankan captain called it right at the toss and elected to field first. The Dubai International stadium looked all set for a stunning match between two great nations. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, came into the match after defeating Afghanistan in the Super 4 round.
India lost two of the batters KL Rahul and Virat Kohli pretty early into their innings. It was all up to the Indian skipper Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav from there on to take the Men in Blue to a good total. While Suryakumar Yadav played as second fiddle, Rohit Sharma wreaked havoc with the bat.
Rohit Sharma played a sensational knock of 72 runs in 41 balls, including 5 fours and 4 sixes. However, once he got out, wickets fell in quick succession and India couldn't finish well. India were restricted to 173 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in the first innings.
Sri Lanka's stunning chase
Sri Lankan openers Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis made a cracking start for the Sri Lankan team as they kept smashing boundaries all over the park. The Indian bowlers kept struggling to find a wicket and it looked like the island nation might win the match without even losing a wicket.
Sri Lanka ended up amassing 89 for the loss of no wicket in ten overs. India, on the other hand, were all set to face yet another humiliating defeat. Kusal Mendis, the aggressive opener kept toying with the Men in Blue bowlers who were succumbing to pressure.
Yuzvendra Chahal then came to India’s rescue removing Nisanka and Charith Asalanka in the same over. Ashwin also joined the party removing Danushka Gunathilaka in the 14th over. Chahal got another wicket removing the dangerous Mendis. Sri Lanka, suddently, were four down for 110 after 14.1 overs.
Seeing their team in trouble, Bhanuka Rajapaksa and Dasun Shanaka came together at the crease and got involved in a match-winning 64-run partnership. Sri Lanka handed a humiliating defeat to India and knocked them out of the Asia Cup 2022.
