England convincingly defeated India in the final Test match of the five-match series by seven wickets. The match at Edgbaston saw a lot of ups and downs throughout the five days, but positive batting by the English side ensured them a win in the match. With this win, England levelled the series 2-2.

Ben Stokes won the toss and decided to bowl first as he was confident of chasing the target. India, on the other hand, got off to a shaky start with the bat, losing five wickets for a total of 98 runs. Rishabh Pant (146 runs in 111 balls) and Ravindra Jadeja (104 runs in 194 balls), however, turned the game around with a superb batting outburst. While the former played a fearless game, the latter only took chances of loose deliveries.

Each produced a century to help India to a total of 416 runs in their first innings. Jasprit Bumrah then scalped the top three England batters, putting them in trouble. However, Jonny Bairstow (106 runs in 140 balls) continued his form from the last series against New Zealand to complete a century and help his team bounce back. He helped England score 284 runs, handing India a 132-run lead.

In India's second innings, only Cheteshwar Pujara (66) and Pant (57) had some runs under their belt. No other batter could do much as the English bowlers never allowed them to settle in. Ben Stokes claimed four wickets, while Stuart Broad and Matty Potts both got two. India scored 245 runs, setting a target of 378 runs.

In the final innings, Alex Lees (56)and Zak Crawley (46) formed a solid opening partnership of 107 runs. India followed it up with three wickets in quick succession. England's total was 109 runs for three wickets. However, Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root were at the top of their game. On a surface that looked good to bat on by now, the two played a smart game.

The two accounted for a 269-run partnership as they guided the team through the line. Bairstow (114 runs in 145 balls) completed his twin century of the match, while Root remained not out on 142 runs in 173 balls. This was any team's biggest successful chase against India.
