With Jasprit Bumrah ruled out of the T20 World Cup, India finds itself in a difficult situation. Bumrah was supposed to be their lead bowler, and his shoes will be big to fill for any player. Bowling has been a bit of a worry for India, and Bumrah's absence will add to it.
The 28-year-absence old's from the starting lineup has hampered the team's strategy, as seen in the T20I series against South Africa. Following an impressive start in the series opener, India's pacers failed to replicate their performance, allowing over 200 runs in the next two matches.
While the BCCI is yet to name Bumrah's replacement for the showpiece event, captain Rohit Sharma provided a significant update. He stated that any decision in this regard will be made after the team arrives in Australia. The bowler's experience in Australian conditions will also be considered, he added.
"Bumrah is out of the World Cup, so we need to find a bowler who has the experience of bowling in Australia. Not sure who that bowler is going to be, we will see once we travel to Australia, we'll find it out there," Rohit said at the post-match presentation ceremony.
Looking at the current lineup, Mohammed Shami and Deepak Chahar are the two standby bowlers who will accompany the team to Australia. Mohammed Siraj, a last-minute replacement for Bumrah ahead of the South Africa T20Is, is also an option.
We'll have to get reports as to how he's recovering: Rahul Dravid on Mohammed Shami
Meanwhile, Dravid stated that a decision on Shami's participation would be made soon. "In terms of who the replacement is, we'll have a look, we'll see, we've got time until October 15th. Shami obviously is someone who's in the standbys, but unfortunately for us, he couldn't play this series, which would have been ideal from that perspective," Dravid said in the press conference after India's loss against South Africa.
"He's in the NCA (National Cricket Academy in Bangalore) at the moment - we'll have to get reports as to how he's recovering, and what's his status after 14-15 days of Covid, and we'll take a call, once I get reports on how he's feeling, then we can take a call and the selectors can take a call on how we move forward on it," Dravid added.
