Pakistan and New Zealand clashed against each other in the final match of the 5-match ODI series at the National Stadium in Karachi on Sunday, May 7. The Men in Green entered the contest with a winning lead 4-0 and were expected to play without any pressure but that didn't happen as they lost the match by 47 runs and also lost their no. 1 ODI ranking. Australia are back to the top, the Indian team has secured the No. 2 once again while Pakistan are slipped to the 3rd spot.
Talking about the match, New Zealand opted to bat first after winning the toss and put up a massive total of 299 runs. Tom Blundell departed early but Will Young looked in fluent touch and put the bad balls away with ease. He got good company from skipper Tom Latham and they both didn't let the spinners settle.
Shadab Khan produced a peach to get rid of Young on 87 runs but Mark Chapman came in and played a breezy knock of 43 runs off just 33 balls to keep the momentum going. But in a bid to be aggressive, both Chapman and Latham lost their wickets. Shaheen Afridi was brilliant in the slog overs as he mixed his pace and dented the opposition by picking up 3 wickets.
Poor batting performance by Pakistan
In the second innings, New Zealand made a great bowling start by not offering many boundary balls early on, which caused Pakistan's top four to crumble. Shan Masood, a breakthrough by Matt Henry, was followed by the vital dismissals of Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan by Henry Shipley. Then, Rachin Ravindra produced a superb spell, dismissing the effective Fakhar Zaman in the process. The required rate was a major issue even after Agha Salman and Iftikhar Ahmed put up a nearly 100-run stand for the fifth wicket.
The partnership was finally broken by the day's greatest bowler, Shipley, who returned to bowl once more, and the other teams just gave in to the required rate. Iftikhar played a fantastic hand and came very near to scoring his first international century, but he was unable to surpass the milestone by 6 runs and lead his team to win.
