The 8th game of the Women’s Big Bash League between Melbourne Stars and Adelaide Strikers saw a huge controversy erupt. 19-year-old Rhys McKenna was given out stumped in the most bizarre and controversial fashion by the umpire.

The game played at Junction Oval in Melbourne saw Adelaide Strikers win the game by 4 wickets. With this win, Adelaide Strikers have now gone second in the points table. Melbourne Stars on the other hand are now sixth in the table after suffering their 2nd loss.

Meg Lanning won the toss and chose to bat first, the Stars had played two games winning one and losing one ahead of the game Tuesday. The Strikers had also come into the game with two points from two games just like their opponents.

A bizarre decision by the umpire costs Rhys McKenna her wicket –

19-year-old Rhys McKenna was batting well on 14 runs from just four balls. The youngster was facing Megan Schutt who bowled a full-toss as the batter missed it. Adelaide Strikers wicket-keeper went up for appeal in an instant as the umpire gave it out.

When the replays came on the entire incident became clear. When the ball struck the stumps McKenna still had her feet inside the crease which is technically enough to give the batter not-out. The batter had left the ground only after the bails had fallen on the ground.

The commentators couldn’t believe what they were watching as they questioned the decision made by the umpire. One of the commentators was heard saying “Hang on, How is that out? That’s not out. She was well and truly in her crease. This is ridiculous”.

Melbourne Stars scored 133 for the loss of six wickets from their 20 overs after electing to bat first. M. Bouchier was the top scorer for her side with 48 runs from 38 balls with 6 fours and a six. Alice Capsey batted well to score 25 runs which came off 26 deliveries.

Chasing 134 to win, Katie Mack was the top scorer for the Adelaide side with 48 runs. Her knock came off 40 balls with 6 hits to the fence. Madeline Penna with 28 not out and Bridgette Patterson’s 27 helped the strikers chase home the total. The win came with 2 balls left to play and 4 wickets in hand.
