'What a game to start the season' - Fans react as Mumbai Indians Women beat Delhi Capitals Women by 4 wickets in a thrilling tournament opener of WPL 2024

Mumbai Indians Women continued their record of being successful in the WPL while chasing the target. Harmanpreet Kaur & co. won the nail-biting thriller against Delhi by 5 runs.

Mumbai Indians Women locked horns with Delhi Capitals Women in the thrilling tournament opener of the Women’s Premier League 2024. Both teams played this match at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Friday. MI-W skipper Harmanpreet Kaur won the toss and asked Delhi Capitals Women to bat first.

Batting first, the Capitals posted a decent total of 171 runs for the loss of 5 wickets in the allotted 20 overs. Star number 3 batter Alice Capsey played a brilliant knock of 75 runs off 53 balls, with 8 fours and 3 sixes, alongside Jemimah Rodrigues who played a fiery knock of 42 runs off just 24 balls, with 5 fours and 2 sixes.

Nat Sciver-Brunt and Amelia Kerr scalped 2 wickets each for MI-W in the first innings of the match. Besides Brunt and Kerr, Shabnim Ismail also picked one wicket for her side.

Mumbai Indians script historic chase

While chasing the target, Harmanpreet’s Mumbai went through a lot of roller coasters during this run-chase; skipper Kaur herself with an exemplary knock of 55 runs off 34 balls, with 7 fours and a six. Other than him, opener Yastika Bhatia scored 57 runs off 45 balls, with 8 fours and 2 sixes.

But everyone was on their feet when the Mumbai Indians Women needed 5 runs off the last ball of the match and debutant Sajeevan Sajana was on the strike for the last ball. It was also her only ball which she played in the entire match. But this one ball played by debutant Sanjana became the match-defining and decisive for MI-W as she smashed an unbelievable and amazing six off the last ball to cross the line for her side.

Eventually, Mumbai Indians Women won this nail-biting last-ball thriller by 4 wickets to start their campaign on a winning note in the Women’s Premier League 2024.
