New Zealand emerged victorious in the inaugural World Test Championship final. But the loss of team India in the title match disappointed a lot of cricket fans. The title match was badly hit by rains in Southampton. New Zealand managed to take the trophy home with the help of experienced players like Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor.
The summit clash also featured some brilliant bowling performances. Kyle Jamieson, Ishant Sharma, Trent Boult, and Neil Wagner had a brilliant bowling spell. In the bowling department, Ross Taylor shone in the fourth innings for New Zealand. But Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane batted well in the first innings for India.
Some of the top performers from the WTC final are as follow:
Kyle Jamieson
Kyle Jamieson has been the best New Zealand bowler since his debut against India in 2020. Even in the WTC final, he maintained his form and helped changed the game for New Zealand. He picked up five wickets in the first innings including that of Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant. In the next innings as well he dismissed Virat Kohli.
Jamieson also performed with the bat and helped New Zealand gain a 32 run lead in the first innings. He also won the player of the match award as he was the most effective bowler in the match.
Mohammed Shami
Mohammed Shami was the only Indian bowler who created pressure on the Kiwi batsmen and picked up important wickets. He bowled inconsistent line and length throughout the match. He picked up four wickets and helped restrict the Kiwi's lead to only 32 runs. If other Indian bowlers had given a similar performance then India could have won the final.
Kane Williamson
The New Zealand skipper played an important 49 run knock in the first innings. Moreover, in the second innings, he made an unbeaten 52 runs to see his team through.
There were questions about his overseas form and fitness leading to the title match. But he successfully stepped up in the biggest Test match in the history of cricket. Williamson proved his ability to captain the team to success and lifted the championship trophy.
