In a video shared on his YouTube channel, Aakash Chopra commented on the batting collapse of Team India. According to him, it is because of the lack of practice in seam-friendly conditions. The stop-start nature of the game due to rainfall has also impacted the performance of Team India in the WTC Final.
The Indian team lost all its wicket for just 217 runs on the third day of the title match. At one point India was 146/3 on Day 2 but the game changed on Day 3 when Kyle Jamieson took the wicket of Virat Kohli. Not even a single Indian player could cross the half-century mark in the first innings.
Aakash Chopra highlighted the factors that lead to India’s batting collapse during the match. He stated that playing a Test match requires patience and consistency. Virat Kohli was well prepared for the title match but the change in conditions broke the concentration of the team. Moreover, the Indian team has less experience of playing in seam-friendly conditions. So New Zealand got the opportunity to reassess and regroup which changed the game for them.
Aakash Chopra pointed out that the Blackcaps took the field with a proper plan on Day 3 of the match. The bowlers used a definite strategy to get important batsmen. Kyle Jamieson changed his length and hit the pads to get Virat Kohli. Whereas the deliveries were wide to get Rishabh Pant. Indian players were not allowed to set themselves to play long innings.
Virat Kohli had failed to make any runs on Day 3 and was bowled out for just 44 runs. Rishabh Pant could hit just a single boundary before his wicket also fell to Jamieson.
Aakash Chopra does not want to criticize the Indian batting unit
The cricketer-turned commentator agreed that Ajinkya Rahane could have avoided the shot that got him out. But Aakash Chopra stated that he wouldn’t criticize the batsman for that.
Ajinkya Rahane played Test cricket after a long time and his uneasiness was visible on the field. He could have avoided playing the shot that got his wicket. But the issue is not about a single batsman. The entire setup of the tournament had some general issues. So being critical of Indian batting would not be the right choice.
Aakash Chopra concluded that India played well considering that they have not played first-class cricket in English summer. Whereas the Kiwis played a two-match test series against England before the WTC final.
