When England still needed 178 runs to win with half their side back in the pavilion, Bairstow was controversially run-out in the 2nd Test of the Ashes 2023. He had just ducked underneath a short delivery off Cameron Green, brushed the crease using his shoe and then made his way down the field to meet his teammate Ben Stokes towards the non-striker's end.

Alex Carey, the wicketkeeper, caught the ball with a bounce and swiftly under-armed the throw towards the striker's end stumps before Bairstow had even started to leave his crease. The judgement was deferred by the on-field umpires to TV umpire Marais Erasmus, who dismissed the batter and marked him out as a stumping. Boos echoed throughout Lord's as Bairstow walked away, glaring at the Australian group.

However, Head said during an interview with the Willow Talk podcast that in the first Test at Edgbaston, Bairstow almost dismissed him using the same technique. He said, "I sort of reminded Jonny last week I walked out of my crease at Edgbaston, at the end of the over. And the ball got whipped in, and I quickly whipped my bat back and questioned Jonny: would you take the stumps? And he said, 'Bloody oath I would,' and ran off.”

The left-handed batter added on how he reminded Bairstow that he did a similar thing. He said, “So I sort of reminded him that remember last week when you said you'd do exactly the same thing? Whether he remembered saying that or not, but two days before he also tried to throw Marnus' stumps down.”

The controversy over Bairstow's removal has only grown as the series goes to Headingley on Thursday, despite Australia going on prevailing in the Lord's Test by 43 runs to establish a 2-0 lead in the Ashes. Pat Cummins, the captain of Australia, justified his choice not to appeal regarding the wicket, but Ben Stokes, the captain of England, claimed he wasn't going to come out on top that way.

The teams won't be having a beer together anytime soon, according to England's coach Brendon McCullum, and the manner of the dismissal will energise his players for the remainder of the series. Rishi Sunak as well as Anthony Albanese, the prime ministers from both nations, have also joined in, supporting their respective teams.
