Former England opener Alex Hales announced his retirement from international Cricket with immediate effect on Friday. Hales made his T20I debut against India in 2011, while his ODI and Test debuts happened much later in 2014 and 2015, respectively. The opener signs off from his England career as a T20 World Cup winner, having played his last game in their five-wicket win over Pakistan at the MCG in November last year.

He has been in England's team over the last nine months, weighing up the balance between bilateral series and his franchise cricket contracts. He has opted to bow out of the international game, confirming his continued availability for short-form leagues around the world. The 34-year-old has scored over 5000 runs for England across all formats.

It’s been a privilege to pull on the England shirt as many times as I have, across all formats: Alex Hales

England is becoming more comfortable with white-ball players choosing out of bilateral matches, but repeated confrontations influenced Hales' decision. He recently informed England's managing director of men's cricket, Rob Key, that he was thinking about retiring from international cricket, and he confirmed that decision on Thursday evening.

The opener stated, "It’s been a privilege to pull on the England shirt as many times as I have, across all formats." "So now to be able to reflect on that journey, the career I’ve had on the international stage and the moments I have been fortunate enough to be a part of, is really satisfying."

"There are so many memories that I have made both on and off the pitch, but I look back, particularly to those two One Day International World Record scores at Trent Bridge, and being able to reach three figures in both of those games on my home ground was really special. "And, clearly, to come away from my last tournament with England as a T20 World Cup winner is the perfect finish."

He opted out of England's T20I series in Bangladesh earlier this year in order to fulfil a contract in the PSL, and faced another clash of commitments later this month. He is in talks with a CPL franchise about a replacement deal, which would have ruled him out of England's home T20I series against New Zealand.
