Team India, under the captaincy of regular skipper Rohit Sharma, is set to play in the Asia Cup 2023, starting on August 30 later this month. Sharma’s men will start their campaign in the tournament with the first match against the arch-rivals Pakistan on September 2 in Kandy, Sri Lanka.
Meanwhile, skipper Rohit Sharma has spoken in detail about the preparations and concerns of the Indian team ahead of Asia Cup 2023 followed by the ODI World Cup 2023, in their own backyard. He discussed the various concerns for the side including the number-4 conundrum since the retirement of former batting great Yuvraj Singh.
He also spoke about testing the capability of batters under pressure situation to get them ready for the two upcoming major international tournaments.
“We will see, we want to win but at the same time, there are a lot of questions that we need answers to. But in the Asia Cup, I want to see some of the guys batting under pressure against quality teams,” said Rohit Sharma was quoted as saying by PTI.
“After Yuvraj Singh, nobody has come and settled themselves in at number 4” – Rohit Sharma
Later, he cleared the air on the number 4 conundrum and the problem India facing to get any batter settled at this batting position.
"Look, No. 4 has been an issue for us for a long time. After Yuvi (Yuvraj Singh), nobody has come and settled themselves in. But, for a long period of time, Shreyas (Iyer) has actually batted at No. 4 and he has done well, his numbers are really good," said Rohit.
"The percentage of injuries that have happened in the last 4-5 years, is massive. When the players get injured or are not available, you try doing different things with different players — that is what I have to say about No. 4. Even before when I was not the captain, I was watching no? There were so many guys who came in and went out. But injuries kept them away or they were not available or someone lost form,” he added later.
This statement on the batting concerns of Team India garnered a lot of attention from cricket fans as the next two months are going to be crucial for Indian cricket owing to the two big tournaments. Fans raised a concern about the experimental mindset of the team management including the coach and captain as well, in such a delicate time for the team.
Here’s how fans reacted:
