The Messi-mania has gripped Miami as the wait is over for Major League Soccer outfit Inter Miami who won their first-ever title in history. It’s no surprise that the David Beckham-owned club’s first piece of silverware comes shortly after Lionel Messi arrives from PSG. Miami defeated Nashville SC 10-9 in penalties in the final of the Leagues Cup, a competition founded in the year 2019.
Lionel Messi remained influential in the win with an absolute ‘golazo’ to open the scoring in the 23rd minute. He received the ball at the edge of the area from Robert Taylor, he put the dancing feet on show as he dribbled past Walker Zimmerman and unleashed a trademark left-footed bending shot that found the top-left corner. However, Nashville equalised with Fafa Picault’s header off a corner in the 56th minute. The 1-1 scoreline sustained itself until the final whistle which paved the way for penalties.

Goalkeeper Drake Callender remained the match-winner for Inter Miami in the shootout
The 7-time Ballon d’Or winner converted the first penalty. However, goalkeeper Drake Callender remained the match-winner for Inter Miami with the penalty that put them ahead in the sudden-death round and a save that confirmed the first-ever title in club history. Callender spoke at length after pulling off title-winning heroics.
“It’s a huge honor to play a role in our first win in a final. It’s pretty surreal. Very emotional. This team works so hard day in, and day out to be able to perform like this on a night like this. And to have it come down to the very end, it was amazing to see the grit, just the belief of what we’re capable of. It’s something special and I’m just blessed to be a part of it,” Callender said.
“I just had to stay focused, breathe through it, stay as calm as possible. I mean, this atmosphere here tonight is electric. So, I embraced the moment and I just believed in the work that I put in and the repetitions I put in leading up to that moment and it just ended up going our way,” he added.
