England had a wonderful outing on Day 1 of the third Test in Headingley. The hosts looked determined and bowled brilliantly to bowl out India for a mere 78. It was a perfect day for England as their openers too stitched a 100 run stand to put India on the mat. Meanwhile, Indian fast bowler Mohammed Siraj was treated with unacceptable behaviour by English fans. The overexcited crowd threw a ball at Siraj. This comes days after the same English spectators threw bottle corks at opener KL Rahul at Lords. Indian skipper Virat Kohli was very upset with the fans and asked Siraj to throw the ball back into the stands. Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant revealed the incident during the post-day press conference.
“I think, somebody (from the crowd) threw a ball at Siraj, so he (Kohli) was upset. You can say whatever you want, chant, but don’t throw things at fielders. It is not good for cricket, I guess,” the southpaw batsman said.
Mohammed Siraj was earlier subjected to racist comments in Australia as well. The pacer was hurdled abuses at the SCG which led to the eviction of certain spectators and a stoppage of play. Meanwhile, India have their backs against the wall and it will be interesting to see if they can show the same character they showed in Australia after getting bowled out for 36, and bounce back in the game. England have a fragile batting lineup and a collapse is always on the cards. Virat Kohli’s team would hope they can break the opening partnership quickly and then make a few more inroads.
