In the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy Australia ended day 2 having an upper edge after restricting India to 163 runs in the second innings. Visitors now only need 75 runs in Three days to win the Indore Test. In absence of Pat Cummins, Steve Smith led Australia completely outplayed Rohit Sharma-led India in the game till now.

Rohit's tactical and judgemental errors cost India during the Australian innings as India lost three reviews early and also leaked too many runs. His decision to bowl Ashwin late on Day 2 cost India some crucial runs. Now, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has slammed Rohit for his poor captaincy and questioned his bowling changes.

Speaking with Star Sports Gavaskar said that India had the opportunity to save 20 to 30 runs by bringing Ashwin early into the attack. Gavaskar said, "I think it makes you wonder whether teams give too much importance to match-ups. Because there were two right-handers in the middle, R Ashwin was not brought on till the last over of the first hour. Because of those match-ups, the two left-handers bowled. Then what happens? Who gets the wicket? R Ashwin. He gets Handscomb out."

You use your best asset, says Sunil Gavaskar

Further justifying his comments Gavaskar said, "Your top bowler will get your wickets, regardless of whether he is bowling to a right-hander or a left-hander. It doesn't make a difference. If he is a great bowler, he will get you wickets. R Ashwin has more than 450 wickets, he is a great bowler. And he should have been given the ball a little bit early."

"You don't send a No. 3 batter to bat No. 7 just because he is a good batter against pace. You send your top batter, he will bat. Why is this thing about bowlers? Why does this thing happen to only Ashwin? You see Ashwin, generally, gets the ball a little bit late. I know he opened the bowling. But today, he was brought in just that little bit late. 20-odd runs could have been saved", he further added.

Notably, Australia needs 75 runs to win the game at the Holkar Stadium in Indore. India is currently leading in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy by 2-0. They will be looking to make a comeback at Narendra Modi Stadium in the fourth Test to avoid a Draw at home.
