On Saturday, Virat Kohli announced his decision to step down as India Test captain with immediate effect. Several former and current cricketers congratulated Kohli for his journey and hailed him as one of the best Test captains of India. Now, the cricketing fraternity and Indian cricket fans are waiting for the announcement of the new captain.

Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar picked Rishabh Pant to be the new captain of the side. He believes that the responsibility of leading the side might help Pant improve his skills and match understanding. Former Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh also aligned himself with the little master. Yuvraj mentioned that Pant reads the game very well from behind the stumps and is a good choice for Kohli's successor.

The actual tussle is likely to be between KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma. Rohit was made the new vice-captain of the Test side last year, before the start of the South Africa series. However, he was ruled out of the same series after sustaining an injury. Hence, KL Rahul was announced as the deputy for Kohli. Rahul got his opportunity to lead the side during the second Test against South Africa after Kohli was ruled out due to a back spasm.

Rohit is the captain of the limited-overs side and hence, he might be the right candidate for this job. But, several former cricketers have opined that BCCI should go in with split captaincy formula due to various reasons, including bio-bubble fatigue. Hence, Pant might also be considered for this role considering that he led the Delhi Capitals franchise last season pretty well.

Absolutely! Reads the game well behind the stumps,” Yuvraj wrote on Twitter, in reply to Gavaskar’s suggestion that Pant should be allowed to lead the side.
