Yuzvendra Chahal has an intimate friendship with Rohit Sharma, India’s limited-overs vice-captain. Chahal recently thought back on how this friendship took root in 2013. It was when Rohit Sharma gave him the chance to make his IPL debut.

Yuzvendra Chahal and Rohit Sharma have known each other since 2011 when he was first selected for Mumbai Indians. He was not getting any opportunities to showcase his skills when Rohit Sharma took over as the Captain of MI.

Yuzvendra Chahal disclosed that Rohit Sharma had come into his room one day soon after taking over as the captain of Mumbai Indians. Sharma had assured him of his debut match at the Wankhede Stadium. The team already had two world-class spinners in the wings. It was unlikely for the team to play 3 spinners on Mumbai’s wicket.

Yuzvendra Chahal accepted that he was bowling well in the IPL and was always among the wickets in practice matches. But the wicket in Mumbai was, till now is, such that it is unlikely to play 3 spinners in a match. Established Test legends like Harbhajan Singh and Pragyan Ojha were the other two spinners for the team. Rohit Sharma believed in him and gave him a chance to play. That is where their bonding took root.

Yuzvendra Chahal failed to take any wicket in that game

Chahal was unable to take any wicket in that game and he did not take any further part in that year’s tournament. However, what Rohit Sharma saw in him was on point. Chahal has become one of the most successful bowlers in IPL history. He's also the lead bowler for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

The Mumbai Indians on the other hand had won that match and Rohit recorded his first win as an IPL captain. Rohit has also achieved great success since then. The Mumbai Indians have won five IPL trophies under his captaincy.

Yuzvendra Chahal also recalled how his friendship with Rohit Sharma became stronger with time. It was particularly when they started playing together for the Indian Team. He, Rohit Sharma, and Kuldeep Yadav always stayed together while playing for the Indian Team. There is mutual respect among them that strengthened their bond with time.

Rohit Sharma would next be seen playing for India in the WTC final and the 5 test series against England. Yuzvendra Chahal on the other hand would play at the limited-over series in Sri Lanka in July.
