Pakistan had a disaster of a start to their 2023 50-over World Cup preparation as the Kiwis defeated them 2-1 at their home in the ODI series. Babar Azam had a forgettable last year due to his poor captaincy records at home. He failed to lead his team to any win in seven home Tests at home in 2022. Fans were not happy with his captaincy and criticized him heavily.
So, Babar Azam was looking for a winning start this year. But, still, he failed to guide his team properly. However, as an individual batter, the Pakistan skipper has been in top form. In 2022, he was the highest run-getter in the longest format of the game. But, in the recently concluded ODI series against New Zealand, he scored only 149 runs in three innings, averaging 49.66.

After losing the series, during the post-match presentation, Babar Azam said: “We were 20 runs, when Rizwan and Fakhar played it looked like we'd touch 300. But when wickets fall, it is difficult for new batters. Lots of soft dismissals and we were 20-30 runs short. We were expecting more turns than we got. But spinners played their role. But we couldn't quite execute in the last 10 overs with the ball.” Now, the Men in Green will play the Kiwis again in April 2023 in a home T20I and ODI series.
But, on 15 January 2023, the Pakistan skipper got involved in an unwanted controversy. An unknown girl shared some of his private pictures and an alleged voice recording on social media platforms. The girl also claimed that she is Babar Azam’s girlfriend and he has cheated on him. So, some fans were in shock after seeing such leaked allegations. Wherever some fans raised their voices against him and urged for justice for the girl. Reports have come out also that girl might be one of his teammate’s girlfriends.
