On 18 November 2022, team India were looking to begin their T20I series in New Zealand. But, heavy rain abandoned the match completely. After the semi-final exit from the 20-20 World Cup, it was a fresh start for the Men in Blue. But, on the same day, the Indian Cricket Board decided to sack Chetan Sharma and his entire Selection Committee
Fans went crazy after such a bold decision from the Board. Now, the Board will look to appoint new members for the Selection Committee in the upcoming days. However, there were several reasons why this Selection Committee got the backlash from the Board. According to PTI reports, five reasons influenced the Board for taking such a decision.
Here are five reported reasons that led to the sacking of Chetan Sharma and the entire Selection Committee by the Indian Cricket Board
1. Removal of Virat Kohli from the captaincy
During the tenure of Chetan Sharma and his entire Selection Committee, they ripped off Virat Kohli from the captaincy of team India. After getting knocked out from the 2021 20-20 World Cup from the group stage, Virat Kohli decided to step down from the captaincy of the T20Is. But, he was willing to continue as the leader in both the Test and ODI formats.
But, the Board and Selection committee decided to make Rohit Sharma the captain in the white-ball format. While they were looking for Kohli to continue as the Test captain. But, after the test series in South Africa, Virat decided to step down from Test captaincy also. Then, Rohit Sharma became the all-format captain for the Men in Blue.
2. Unable to make a settled squad with 7 captains in a year
Chetan Sharma and this National Selection Committee failed to make a settled squad for India across all formats. After becoming captain, Rohit Sharma missed many matches and series due to injury. So, for different series and formats, team India got different captains. Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, Shikhar Dhawan, and KL Rahul got the opportunity to lead.
Even, Jasprit Bumrah led the Men in Blue in the fifth rescheduled test against England in Edgbaston. So, the appointment of so many captains in just one year made issues within the team. Even, it made an effect on managing a balance within a settled squad before the tournaments like Asia Cup and the 20-20 World Cup.
3. Disappointing Performance from the team in Asia Cup and T20 World Cup
All Indian fans were hoping to see Rohit Sharma and his men do well in both the Asia Cup and the 20-20 World Cup. But, the Men in Blue failed on both occasions miserably. India failed to qualify for the final in the Asia Cup. While, in the World Cup, they lost to England in the semi-final.
In both tournaments, India went as one of the favourites to clinch the title this time around. But, they failed to put smiles on their fans’ faces both times. After the semi-final exit from the World Cup, fans criticized the players a lot. So, such shambolic performance in both tournaments might influence this decision of sacking Chetan Sharma and the entire Selection Committee.
4. Picking KL Rahul after 8 months gap and rushing Japrit Bumrah to the team
Another reason behind this decision might be the inclusion of KL Rahul. This Selection committee picked KL Rahul straight into the team after his injury recovery. Since the comeback, he failed miserably with the bat. Rahul failed to show his class in both the Asia Cup and the 20-20 World Cup.
They also rushed Jasprit Bumrah to the team. Bumrah missed the Asia Cup due to injury. But, ahead of the World Cup, he made a comeback in the home T20I series against the Aussies. But, after only two matches, he got injured again. Then, Bumrah missed the whole World Cup also for team India.
5. Not picking domestic and Indian T20 League performers
Indian players always look to do well in domestic tournaments and the Indian T20 League. Such performances can only help them to get a place in the Indian team. But, this Selection Committee did not consider many performances of those tournaments for the Men in Blue. For example, Prithvi Shaw has showcased a top-form with the bat in these tournaments.
Still, he failed to get a chance on the team. Ravi Bishnoi is another name who did not manage a place in the final squad of team India for the World Cup. He also performed well in the Asia Cup and the series in West Indies. So, the lack of opportunities for new faces backfired on Chetan Sharma and his entire Selection Committee.
