MS Dhoni was one of the most decorated cricketers for India across all three formats. As skipper, he won all major titles for the country. Even, under him, India became the number one team in the longest format of the game. As an individual batter also, Dhoni managed to break many records.
In ODIs, he managed to score more than 10000 runs, even while batting down the order. But, there were several records in International cricket that even Dhoni failed to break or achieve. Seein his overall stats and abilities, fans might find it very surprising to see Dhoni missing out on these records by such margins.
Here are the five records that MS Dhoni failed to break in International Cricket:
1. Most dismissals by a wicket-keeper in ODIs and Tests
MS Dhoni is one of the most successful wicket-keepers for team India across any format. In the T20Is, he is the most successful wicketkeeper. In 97 innings, he has 91 dismissals. But, Dhoni failed to become the most successful wicketkeeper in ODIs and Tests. In 345 ODI innings, Dhoni has 444 dismissals and he is in the third spot.
Then, Australia’s Adam Gilchrist is in the second spot with 472 dismissals in 281 ODI innings. While Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara is in the top spot with 482 dismissals in 353 ODI innings. On the other hand, the former Indian wicketkeeper is in the fifth spot with 294 dismissals in 166 Test innings. South Africa’s Mark Boucher is in the top spot with 555 dismissals in 281Test innings.
2. Failed to complete 100 matches in T20Is and Tests
MS Dhoni has represented team India in 538 matches across all three formats. But, he failed to play 100 matches for the Men in Blue in T20Is and Tests. Dhoni played 98 T20Is where he scored 1617 runs in 85 innings. On the other hand, he played 90 Tests where he scored 4876 runs in 144 innings.
There are several players still on the team who have played more than 100 matches across any two formats for India. So, it was a massive setback for a player like MS Dhoni who has done so much for Indian Cricket. Dhoni took retirement on 30 December 2014 from the longest format of the game.
3. Failed to score 5000 runs in Tests
MS Dhoni played 90 Tests where he scored 4876 runs in 144 innings. He batted at an average of 38.09 including six hundred and 33 fifties. His best knock came against Australia when he scored 224. He made his Test debut on 2 December 2005 against Sri Lanka at Chennai. However, he played his last Test match against Australia on 26 December 2014.
Dhoni managed only one double hundred in his whole Test career. In his last Test match, Dhoni scored 11 runs in the first innings. Then, in the second innings, he scored 24* runs off 39 balls as India played a draw against the home team in Melbourne. Dhoni fell short of 22 sixes to reach the 100-sixes mark in the longest format of the game.
4. Most Test runs as India's skipper
MS Dhoni was the Test captain for the Men in Blue from 2008 to 2014. He led the team in 60 matches where India won 27 games while lost 18 games. However, Dhoni also failed to score the most runs in Tests as India’s skipper. He captained the team in 60 matches where he scored 3454 runs at an average of 40.64 with five centuries and 24 fifties.
However, he is in the second spot as Virat Kohli is in the top spot. Kohli scored 5864 runs as team India's Test skipper. His best knock in this longest format of the game came as the skipper only. Dhoni scored 224 runs off 265 balls, including 24 fours and six over-boundaries against the Aussies. It was India’s first innings of the Chennai Test in 2013.
5. Failed to become the most successful captain for India in Tests
MS Dhoni was one of the most successful captains of all time across all formats. He won the 2011 50-over World Cup, the 2013 Champions Trophy, and the 2007 20-over World Cup for the Men in Blue. Under his captaincy, India won the 2010 and 2011 Test Mace also. Still, Dhoni failed to become the most successful Test captain for India.
He led India in 60 Tests where he managed to win 27 games. He lost 18 games while drawing 15 matches. His winning percentage was 45. However, Virat Kohli is at the top of this list with 40 wins out of 68 matches. His winning percentage was 58.82. However, Dhoni was the second captain for India to win a Test series in 41 years in 2009.
