Team India departed for Sri Lanka for the ongoing Asia Cup 2023; the tournament has kicked off as the tournament opener is underway between the hosts Pakistan and the new entrants Nepal. India, under the captaincy of regular skipper Rohit Sharma, will play their campaign opener against the arch-rivals, Pakistan.
Both teams will play this match at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy on Saturday, September 2. Indian selectors announced the 17-men squad including one travelling reserve for the continental championship. However, the Men in Blue recently faced a blow after a confirmation that the star wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul will not be available to play in the first two games against Pakistan and Nepal, respectively.
Recently, the full-strength Team India played the two-match Test series against West Indies followed by the three-match ODI series. They won the three-match ODI series by 2-1 before heading to the Asia Cup 2023.
The tournament is going to be very crucial for Team India’s preparations for the upcoming World Cup 2023. Apart from that, Rohit Sharma’s men will also be eyeing to lift the Asia Cup title for the 8th time; they missed it last year after getting knocked out from the super-4 round of the tournament.
Amidst all this, in a good piece of news for the Indian team and the Indian cricket fans, the star middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer is also making his comeback in international cricket after a long injury break. He is not in action with India after sustaining a back injury earlier this year. He can play a vital role for the team in the very important number 4 position in the batting order.
Here’s a look at the Indian squad for the Asia Cup 2023:
Rohit Sharma (Captain), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, KL Rahul, Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya (VC), Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Shami, Mohd. Siraj, and Prasidh Krishna.
Travelling Reserve – Sanju Samson.
