On 25 November 2022, Team India began their three-match ODI series in New Zealand. Recently, they won the three-match T20I series under Hardik Pandya’s leadership after the 20-20 World Cup. After that tournament, all big-name players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli took a rest from the whole tour.

So, Hardik Pandya led the team in the T20I series. While Shikhar Dhawan got the opportunity to lead the team in this ODI series. So, fans were hoping for a winning start from the Men in Blue in the first ODI. Speaking of the match, Kane Williamson won the toss and asked India to bat first.

New Zealand defeated India by seven wickets in the first ODI of the series

For India, the skipper, Shikhar Dhawan, and Shubman Gill came out to open the innings. Gill scored 50 runs off 65 balls, including one four and three sixes. Along with him, Dhawan scored 72 runs off 77 balls, including 13 fours. Then, Shreyas Iyer also scored 80 runs off 76 balls, including four boundaries and four sixes. He batted at a strike rate of 105.26. However, Rishabh Pant failed again as he scored just 15 runs off 23 balls. Sanju Samson scored 36 runs off 38 balls, including four boundaries. Thus, India managed to score 306 runs for seven wickets in 50 overs. For the Kiwis, both Tim Southee and Lockie Ferguson took three wickets each.

In reply, New Zealand batters failed to give a good start as the first wicket fell on just 35 runs in 7.3 overs. Then, Kane Williamson and Tom Latham stitched a partnership of 221 runs as New Zealand chased the target down in just 47.1 overs. Thus, they managed to defeat India by seven wickets in the first ODI of the series. Latham scored 145* runs off 104 balls, including 19 fours and five sixes. Along with him, Williamson scored 94* runs off 98 balls, including seven fours and one six. Latham also won the player of the match award for his brilliant knock.
