Afghanistan won the toss and elected to bat first in the second ODI of the ongoing series against Pakistan in Sri Lanka. Riding on a magnificent opening stand of 227 between openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran, Afghanistan posted a massive 300/5 in 50 overs. Gurbaz scored a run-a-ball 151, decorated with 14 fours and three sixes. At the same time his partner, Zadran, was the first wicket to fall in the 40th over for 80 off 101, including six fours and two sixes. Mohammed Nabi scored a run a ball 29 while skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi added 15 off 11 to push to score to 300.

Talking of the bowling from Pakistan, star pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi remained the pick of the bowlers with figures of 2/58 in 10 overs. At the same time, Naseem Shah and Usama Mir returned with one wicket each. It was a relatively quieter bowling display from Pakistan with the likes of Haris Rauf, Shadab Khan, and Iftikhar Ahmed going wicketless.

Shadab Khan was awarded the ‘Player of the Match’

In response, Pakistan chased the target down with one wicket in hand and just one single ball to spare. They were given a good start by openers Fakhar Zaman and Imam-ul-Haq with a 52-run opening partnership. Imam-ul-Haq went on to score 91 off 105, including four boundaries, and was unlucky to fall short of his century. Skipper Babar Azam departed for 53 off 66, including six fours. In the end, it was Shadab Khan’s final push with 48 off 35, including three fours and a six that helped Pakistan over the finish line. He was also adjudged the ‘Player of the Match’. However, the winning runs came off Naseem Shah’s bat.

Fazalhaq Farooqi remained the pick of the bowlers for Afghanistan with figures of 3/69 in 9.5 overs. Mohammed Nabi followed him closely at 2/46 while Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Abdul Rahman returned with one wicket each. Star spinner Rashid Khan had a surprising wicketless outing. Pakistan now lead the three-match ODI series by 2-0.
