After grabbing some exciting deals from European teams, Saudi Pro League champions Al-Ittihad are looking for new opportunities. The team is reportedly eyeing Liverpool duo Joe Gomez and Mohamed Salah. The Arab club is looking to bid a huge amount to get one of them to strengthen their defensive line.
The Reds signed the 26-year-old Gomez from Charlton Athletic eight years ago. During this time, he made 175 appearances across all competitions. However, injuries and a decline in form in the latter half of the previous season caused Gomez to lose his spot in Jurgen Klopp's starting lineup. He's now behind Ibrahima Konate and Joel Matip in the pecking order.
Gomez, who can operate as a centre-back or right-back, participated in only 15 Premier League matches last season and made just two substitute appearances in the current campaign. Gomez previously played a significant role under Klopp, contributing to Liverpool's victories in the 2018-19 Champions League and the subsequent Premier League season.
Joe Gomez can move to a new team for more opportunities
Joe Gomez also earned 11 international caps for England between 2017 and 2020. However, he's now considered a backup option for both club and country. Despite having four years left on his Liverpool contract, Gomez might explore opportunities for regular first-team play elsewhere.
According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, Saudi Arabian side Al-Ittihad, led by former manager Nuno Espirito Santo, has a keen interest in Gomez due to his versatility. Although Al-Ittihad is interested, Liverpool isn't looking to sell Gomez. However, in the end, it will be Gomez who decides whether to move ahead with a deal or not. It will be interesting to understand why Al-Ittihad is falling behind Liverpool's talent pool.
So far this summer, Al-Ittihad has made a number of prominent signings, including Fabinho from Liverpool, Karim Benzema, N'Golo Kante, and Jota. Gomez is not the only Liverpool player on Al-Ittihad's radar; the club is also rumoured to be planning a big-money transfer for Egyptian superstar Mohamed Salah.
