Manchester Originals and Northern Superchargers locked horns at Old Trafford in the third game of The Hundred 2022 (Men's). The visitors won the toss and elected to field first. The Originals had a poor start as Phil Salt (1) tried to play on the off-side but was caught by Harry Brook at short extra cover off David Willey. The scorecard read 16/1 at this stage. Skipper Jos Buttler and Wayne Madsen stitched a partnership of 84 runs.

Madsen (43) became the second victim of Willey on the 64th ball of the innings with 100 runs on the board. 12 balls later, Buttler (59) followed as he was clean bowled by his national teammate, Adil Rashid. Andre Russell and Paul Walter helped the team to post 161/4 at the end of the innings. Russell scored an unbeaten 29 off 20 balls while Walter scored 23 off just 10 balls. The latter was trapped lbw by Dwayne Bravo with four balls left in the innings.

In reply, the Superchargers started fine but lost the wicket of the skipper Faf du Plessis (15) on the 18th ball of the innings to Fred Klaassen. Michael Peeper (12) started briskly but his inning was cut short by Ashton Turner. Adam Lyth scored 51 off 30 balls opening the batting and was caught at deep cover by Sean Abbott off Russell. At 86/3, the team needed a sustainable partnership.

The likes of Harry Brook and Willey added 41 runs for the fourth wicket before the latter was caught at deep midwicket by Abbott off Matt Parkinson. The left-hander scored 29 off 21 balls with two sixes and a four. The likes of Harry Brook (33*) and David Wiese (15*) took the team over the line with six balls to spare and as many wickets in hand.

With this, the Purple brigade have started their tournament with a win. Notably, once again, a Jos Buttler-led side has lost a game. He is not having the best of times as a skipper as his national side lost series' against India as well as South Africa before the tournament.
