On 3 January 2023, team India will begin their first assignment against Sri Lanka in a three-match T20I series at home. Followed by that series, they will play a three-match ODI series also. However, senior players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have taken a rest from the T20I series. Hence, Hardik Pandya will lead the team in Rohit’s absence.
After the 20-20 World Cup exit in 2022, India went to New Zealand for a T20I and ODI series. Hardik led the team and won the T20I series by a 1-0 margin. So, there were reports that the Indian Cricket Board might look to make Pandya the skipper in the white-ball formats. Now, he is going to lead in the T20I series while he is the vice-captain in the ODI series.
Hardik Pandya will be crucial for team India in any white-ball format
Ahead of the series opener, Hardik Pandya attended the pre-match press conference on 2 January 2023. He said that 2022 was a magical year for him despite the team failing to with the 20-20 World Cup title. Pandya said: “Obviously, one year back, things were quite different. It was my call to go out and get better and it has been a magical year for me. Obviously, we would have liked to win the 20-20 World Cup but that is part and parcel. It did not happen and that’s alright. Going forward, what do I want to achieve? There’s a lot to achieve. I haven’t achieved anything in my career. So, looking forward to the future and the goal is going to win the World Cup.”
The all-rounder also added that his new year resolution is to win the World Cup for team India in 2023. He said: “The New Year's resolution is to win the World Cup. I don’t think there can be any bigger resolution than that. Our aim will be to win the World Cup and we will try to do that. We will go out there and give everything and things are looking bright.” Hearing such a statement from him, fans came out and slammed him for his over-confident remark.
