The home side had a sensational second day in the fourth Test of Ashes 2023 in Old Trafford, Manchester. Australia resumed the second day whose score was 299/8 at the end of the first day. The English bowlers soon got rid of Australia by claiming the two remaining wickets. Australia was reduced to 317 in their first innings, as Chris Woakes claimed a five-wicket haul.

England did not have a great start, as they lost their opener, Ben Duckett, for just a run in the third over of the innings. What followed later was absolute domination from the home side. Zack Crawley played the innings of his career and tormented the Australian bowlers for fun all over the park. At the other end, Moeen Ali repaid the faith shown to him by the management, as he scored a fifty after being sent to bat at number 3.

Root and Crawley, the nemesis of Australia

The duo had a partnership of 121 runs for the second wicket. Australia was relieved to dismiss Moeen Ali. Starc looked like the only bowler who threatened the English batters throughout the day. As Joe Root came in, England's innings took off in unprecedented levels. Both Crawley and Root smashed the Australian bowlers for fun all over the park. It was a literal mockery of Australian bowlers in the middle.

Joe Root did not have two good Tests in Lord’s and Headingley. In Old Trafford, Root came to his own and helped England. The Talisman of the home side scored 84 runs in 95 balls before Josh Hazlewood got the better of him. With Root, Crawley had a partnership of 206 runs for the third wicket, which came in just 178 deliveries.

The English opener Crawley was undoubtedly the hero of the day. The 25-year-old toyed with the bowlers with his amazing range of shots. With the series on line, the aggressive batter took the attack on bowlers and changed the match in a matter of a couple of sessions. It took a great delivery from Cameron Green to get rid of Crawley. At the end of the second day, England is 384/4 with a lead of 67 runs.
