The World Cup schedule and host cities have become a source of contention between the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the Indian Cricket Board as a result of the continuing hostility between the two cricket governing organisations. The PCB has voiced concerns about playing Afghanistan in Chennai on a spin-friendly surface, but the Indian Cricket Board has vehemently opposed Pakistan's pleas for adjustments.
The PCB was requested by cricket’s governing body to offer comments and recommendations on their calendar for the ODI World Cup 2023 before the schedule was made public. The PCB had worries about playing Afghanistan in Chennai throughout this process.
According to reports, several of the planned matches and sites, notably the match versus Afghanistan in Chennai as well as the game versus Australia in Bengaluru, unnerved the selectors alongside experts affiliated with the PCB.
The Indian Cricket Board, however, has adopted a tough position and declined to accede to the PCB's proposals. The PCB's concerns have been dismissed by the Indian Cricket Board, which is reluctant to change the scheduled timetable in any way. In order to best fit the team's strengths, it has been suggested that Pakistan approach the apex governing body or the Indian Cricket Board to rearrange its games, suggesting that they play Australia in Chennai and Afghanistan in Bengaluru.
According to an Indian Cricket Board source, it is the usual procedure for the apex governing body to solicit proposals for the itinerary from its member boards. To alter the venue, there must be compelling justifications. The source said that while a member board might argue for a site change out of concern for safety, as Pakistan attempted in 2016 before the T20 World Cup in India, voicing objections based on the team's strengths and limitations on the field makes it difficult to finalise the itinerary.
The already tense connection between the two cricketing organisations has become even more tense as a result of the disagreement involving the Indian Cricket Board and PCB about the World Cup scheduling and site choice.
