Although former South African captain AB de Villiers now works as a commentator instead of an international cricketer, his supporters still want to see him on the field slamming the ball out of the park. He ended his time in international cricket in 2018, however, he played for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the IPL until 2021.

De Villiers, affectionately known as "Mr. 360," played for South Africa across 114 Tests as well as 228 ODIs, making 8765 and 9577 runs, respectively. In 184 IPL games he participated in, he amassed 5162 runs, scoring three centuries plus 40 half-centuries.

I want to be the best in the world: AB de Villiers

De Villiers recently told the news organisation IANS that he was capable of continuing to play the sport and that he would compete with others to be the best player in the world. The former Proteas player went on to discuss why he quit the IPL despite having a successful season with the team. The impact player regulation, he claimed, may assist retiring players extend their careers, but he is unable to do so because he does not want to play for only a few months out of every year.

The former South African cricketer said, “I definitely didn’t play enough cricket towards the back end of my career. I think that was the main thing. With this Impact Player, I know a lot of people are celebrating it, it’s going to lengthen the careers of players. To me, I could never do that. I could never just play two or three months of the year because I want to be the best in the world, and you can’t do that if you play for three months of the year. Absolutely no chance.”

He continued by saying, “Yes, you can practice for nine months. But nothing, nothing compares middle practice with being out there and competing. So, the minute that fire went off being the best in the world, I felt like, what? What am I doing? So, what exactly is going on now? So was tough the last few years in that regard as well. I felt like, you know what, I can still have my super knock here and there, but I don’t want to do that. I want to be the best.”
