Pakistan are the host for the upcoming Asia Cup 2023 and ever since Ramiz Raja, the former Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief opened up on the same, the Asian Cricket Council’s (ACC) president Jay Shah clarified that the Indian team would not be travelling to the country due to a long-standing political rift and that the tournament would be held in a neutral venue.
On February 4, Saturday reports emerged claiming that team India would not be travelling to Pakistan and that the tournament would take place at a neutral venue instead. Former PCB chief Raja was sceptical about the stand and said that they would not think twice before boycotting the 50-over World Cup hosted by India later this year.
However, ever since Najam Sethi took over as the new chief of the board, the stand has changed and the PCB boss claimed that they want to play against all nations, not sidelining a country. With the Indian cricket board remaining firm in their stand, it remains to be seen if PCB would come up with a counter reply at the earliest.
Asia Cup 2023 is set to take place at a neutral venue
That being said, the continental tournament might take place at a neutral venue and the official announcement for the same might come at the earliest. With Pakistan unwilling to let go of the opportunity and with the Cricket’s governing body playing little to no role in the ongoing issue, it is more likely that the ACC would come to the rescue and shift the tournament.
In the case of shifting, it remains to be seen if the Men in Green and the board would take a stand against India and the upcoming 50-over World Cup although it might take a hit at their reputation and other future involvements. The Imran Khan-led team won the showpiece event in 1992 and since then, Pakistan have struggled to win it despite sending a strong squad for every edition.
