When Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon went out limping during Day 4 of the second Ashes Test at the Lord's Cricket Ground, he captured the hearts of many fans. Despite suffering a serious calf strain, he entered into bat hobbling. Josh Hazlewood was dismissed by England captain Ben Stokes during the 97th over of the innings. Contrary to what was anticipated, Lyon did come out to help his team add some runs and, together with Mitchell Starc, he was able to contribute some significant runs to the total.

The spinner from New South Wales played some excellent shots, including one off Stuart Broad's delivery that went for a boundary. Finally, he sprayed one in the sky towards mid-wicket, where Stokes collected the catch and was out for only four runs. Stokes also commended Lyon and offered him a hug.

After entering Day 4 with a huge 130-2 deficit, the visitors ensured that England have to score a mammoth total of 371 to secure the victory. Usman Khawaja, Steve Smith, Travis Head, Alex Carey, as well as Pat Cummins were among the Australian batters who fell into the trap of short ball strategy that the England bowlers used. To even the five-match series, England must complete Lord's highest run-chase.

I'd do anything for my team: Nathan Lyon

Nathan Lyon spoke to the media after the game about the decision to go and bat for the side when they needed him. He said, "I knew the risk of batting, but I'd do anything for my team. If it was tomorrow I'd do it again, and again and again for my country."

Vice-captain Steve Smith acknowledged that the absence of the premier off-spinner would be a huge loss but supported Todd Murphy to fill the void in his absence after the former sustained a calf injury while fielding on Day 2 of the Test. He said, “It's not ideal, particularly your spin bowler. It's a (one-person) role. Batters I suppose there's loads of us around so it's a bit different. Obviously, Nathan, if he's no good, he'd be a huge loss. However, Todd Murphy is waiting in the wings. He has been bowling beautifully in the nets and bowled really well in India when he got his opportunity as well."
